Branson sits between Table Rock Lake and Lake Taneycomo, and they could not be more different. Pick the right one for the day you want.
The big recreational lake: 43,000 acres of clear water for boating, wakeboarding, swimming, and bass fishing. Rent a boat or jet skis at the marinas near the dam (State Park Marina is the full-service standby), find a cove, and the Strip feels a hundred miles away. Sunset on Table Rock is the prettiest free show in the Ozarks.
Fed by cold water from the bottom of Table Rock, Taneycomo fishes like a river and is famous for rainbow and brown trout. It runs right past downtown and Branson Landing, so you can cast a line in the morning and be at lunch on the waterfront by noon. Fly fishing below the dam is the bucket-list version.
Missouri's largest trout hatchery, right below Table Rock Dam — raceways full of trout, a conservation center, and trails along the lake. Free, fascinating, and one of the best kid stops in the area. Bring quarters for the fish-food dispensers.
The Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area hides real Ozarks hiking — glades, a waterfall in wet weather, lake views — inside the city limits. Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area on the west side of town adds a lookout tower and more trails.
A 10,000-acre preserve south of town: tram tours past elk and bison, trout fishing, horseback rides, and a mill and treehouse that look like a movie set. Budget half a day; it's the premium outdoor ticket in the region.
The loop past the Dewey Short Visitor Center at the dam, the Table Rock overlooks, and College of the Ozarks is the best short drive in town — and it doubles as a traffic-avoiding side route on show nights.
